Starting from June 11, cinema devotees will have the opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of the Splendid Garden cinema terrace at 61 Elizabetes Street. This is not only a bright summer presentation, but also a step towards a greener and more citizen-friendly Riga. The new outdoor terrace, as the sun sets, will be opened with François Ozone's latest film, Summer of 1985, a love story between two teenage boys in the seaside town of Normandy.
The author of the Splendid Garden concept on the cinema terrace is the architect Signe Zihelmane. “François Ozone's film Summer of 1985 is a romantic story of first love and the search for identity. The reality in Ozone's films is probably a reflection of erotic fantasies,” Daira Āboliņa, Cinema's Artistic Director, reasons for the film to open the Splendid Palace cinema terrace. Last year, the film was included in the list of the Cannes Film Festival, but its premiere dazzled in Tallinn, within the Black Nights Film Festival. Daira Āboliņa promises that the terrace of Splendid Garden will show European cinema hits in the summer. In July, the Italian director Giovanni Troilo's “Frida. Viva la vida” is awaited, and in August the award-winning “Undine” by German director Christian Petzold.
You will be able to visit the Splendid Garden terrace almost every summer evening and follow the program on the website www.splendidpalace.lv. It will also be possible to reserve a table in advance. In case of bad weather, the showings will be postponed and ticket holders will be notified accordingly.
From December 13 to 17, in cooperation with the Italian Embassy in Latvia and N.I.C.E. New Italian Cinema festival, the New Italian Film festival will take place in Latvia for thesecond time, giving the audience the opportunity to watch eight films by young Italian directors.
